The recent decision by the Committee for Industries and Services of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies to reject a politically inspired ban on the use of cyanide in goldmining is to be welcomed. The decision not only places Romania firmly in advance of even the highly regulated European Union industry standard for what is required for the use of cyanide in mining waste (and ahead of other mining operations on the Continents of Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, North America and South America that all use cyanide) it potentially opens the door for the long delayed and blighted Rosia Montana Project.

The proposed ban on cyanide was never more than a delaying tactic for those environmental activists dead set against the proposed mine in Rosia Montana. However, their ideological opposition to the mine will not stop here. There are unfortunately many more battles to be fought to ensure that the people of Rosia Montana are no longer the political football, of an itinerant band of enviroenmtnal activists fronted by the largest landowner in the area.

As the an open letter from two Rosia Montana village based NGOs, Pro Rosia Montana and Pro Dreptatea indicates delays to the mine, and it’s still possible closure are an ongoing economic disaster for local people. They deserve our support and solidarity to ensure that the battle to bring jobs and prosperity so badly needed finally arrives. (Read the open letter here.)
